5 Keys to Passion to Discover Your Path in Life

If there’s one good thing to come out of the pandemic, it’s the massive pause button that’s been pushed. Up until this year, it seems like time has sped by, getting faster with each year that passes and every smartphone that releases. So many found themselves in a routine they stuck to day after day, whether they liked it or not.

The shelter-in-place orders from COVID-19 pushed many into their homes and eventually into a place of self-reflection. People finally had the time to slow down and look at themselves. They wondered whether they were really enjoying their lives or if they were merely stuck in the groove they landed in.

If you’re here you likely reached that point, too. You might be asking yourself if there’s more to life or if you’re really doing what you were meant to do. It’s never too late to reconsider where you’re at in life. Now is a great time to take the steps toward discovering your path in life. These 5 keys to passion will help you discover how to make the shift!

1. Spend some time in reflection

Prior to this year, most people were lodged into their daily routines with little time to slow down and reflect. You’ve probably taken some time to ask yourself what direction you want to head but you should still start here. Uncovering the keys to passion happens during quiet moments of your life.

Set aside a quiet morning, afternoon, or evening to spend some time in meditation and reflection. Turn off any interruptions that may distract you from the process. Leave your phone in another room or put it on Do Not Disturb. Allow yourself the space to get in touch with your inner self.

2. Ask yourself a few questions

During your reflection time, ask yourself the following questions. You can either ponder them silently in your mind, speak them aloud to yourself, or write them down. Writing is an excellent way to supplement the process. It’s a great idea to do some journaling either during your reflection or after to capture your thoughts on the process. Start with the following questions.

What brings a smile to your face?

What are some things you do that make you smile? Consider the moments when you feel the happiest. Where are you? What are you doing? Who are you with? When do these times tend

to happen? Call to mind some of the places, people, and events that make you feel most like yourself. These things that bring you contentment are the start of your keys to passion.

What things are you curious about?

What makes you curious in life? Everyone has at least a few things they’re interested in. What do you read online, see in a show, or experience in your daily life that sparks your curiosity? Which things make you want to pull up a tab and Google them to learn more? Are there any particular topics that you obsess about? Write down some of these things; they’re an important part of discovering your life path.

What do you find yourself getting lost in?

What are some activities or places you find yourself getting lost in? Do you lose track of time when you’re listening to or playing music? Does spending time in nature, whether walking, hiking, running, or biking, consume your attention? Do you ever volunteer with an organization or group and find yourself engrossed in the work you do? Things you get lost in are a crucial aspect of discovering the keys to passion in your life.

What would you do if you had unlimited free time?

What does your ideal day look like? If you didn’t have any responsibilities, what would you spend the day doing? Where would you go? Who would you see? Now imagine you could do that thing every single day. What would you do with your unlimited free time? This is probably the most overwhelming question to ponder but it doesn’t need to be one single answer!

3. Consult your close friends and family

Once you spend some time reflecting and writing, reach out to your closest friends and family members. Bring your findings to some of the people who know you best and have a conversation about what you uncovered. Let them know about your journey to finding the keys to passion and discovering your true path in life.

Talk with people who are invested in your long-term overall wellbeing who will offer an unbiased but supportive opinion. Those who know you can offer guidance and input from an outside perspective. They’ll know what makes you tick and can help you determine whether you’re on the right track with your ideas.

4. Create a visual reminder of the direction you’re headed

Visualization is an important part of the discovery process. Once you have an idea of your next steps, create a visual reminder of the direction you’re headed. Every time you see this visual cue, it reignites your fire and drives you to chase after the keys to passion.

There are dozens of ways you can bring your ideas to life and into the physical world. Some people love to use sticky notes on their mirrors. Others like to set the desktop background on their computer to a related image. Many people swear by the power of creating a vision board. Find something that works for you as long as it keeps your mind on your new path.

5. Your day job doesn’t have to be your passion – at least not yet

“Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” You’ve heard that quote, right? It’s almost a guarantee that you have because there’s been a big push toward this idea. There’s nothing wrong with doing something you love. But there’s also nothing wrong with doing a job that isn’t related to your passion in life.

Instead, you can look at your job as something you use to fund your path in life. That’s perfectly okay! If you find a point where you can shift your passion into something that makes money, that’s great too. But don’t fall into the trap of thinking your day job has to be your path in life in order for you to be successful!

Bonus Step: Ask For Some Outside Help

Sometimes it’s hard to get a birds-eye view of your life when you’re in the middle of it. Reach out for some outside help if you find it hard to discover the keys to passion on your own. Bringing a life coach into the process is a great way to make the most of your shift in life! The additional guidance, support, and direction is never a bad idea.
